I stumbled on www.authorgraph.com a few months ago when I was looking for a way to increase sales of my books. I saw a few other writers using it as a promotional tool on their blogs – giving away “signed” copies of their ebooks as part of a sale or blog hop – and it seemed like a really cool idea.
It’s pretty simple to setup an account. You can either sign up with your twitter account or name and email address – and this goes for readers as well as writers. As an author you can add your book to the service just by looking up the Amazon ASIN (don’t have your books on Amazon? Too bad for you…for now. The site says it isn’t affiliated with Amazon so it’s possible they’ll come up with some other way of looking up your book in the future but for now it’s all about the Amazon).
What the reader gets is a PDF or AZW file with the cover of your book and your message/signature. (Looks something like the above picture – you can see an example of an authorgraph here). So the reader doesn’t actually have to have an ebook to get a signature – they can have a hard copy or any other form. They receive the file, which they can print out or keep digital, whatever they want.
It still isn’t as good as having fans stand in line to have you sign their books in person (especially since a person doesn’t technically even need to own your book to get a signature from you), but it’s a way to interact a little more with your fans and promote your books. There are people out there now who collect these things so just having your book on the site might do a little for your sales/reach.
I would say for the very little time required to set it up, it’s definitely worth it for authors to get their books on this site.
